This also controls entry and exit of substances as it also exhibits hydrophilic heads and hydrophobic tails.

The lipid bilayer acts as a barrier to the passage of molecules and ions into and out of the cell. Phospholipids are lipid molecules made up of a phosphate group head and two fatty acid tails. This is accomplished by the embedding of various protein molecules in and through the lipid bilayer (see figure below).
The cell membrane consists of a lipid bilayer, including cholesterols that sit between phospholipids to maintain their fluidity at various temperatures. Apart from this, there are other different types of parts of a cell, like the mitochondrion, the golgi apparatus, the nuclear membrane, and lysosomes, among many others. It is made of millions of smaller molecules that create a flexible and porous container.
