Pets are great at keeping you company as well as helping your kids learn about the concept of responsibility, and caring. These can make lovely pets, but i don’t suggest them as starter pets.
As i’ve already mentioned, the first pet i was allowed to have was a little goldfish. You have to clean them out once a week and be sure to clean up any dirty areas every day or every other day but thats it. As long as you keep the cage clean, you won't smell a thing.

As long as their cage cleaned weekly and litter tray when needed (every other day usually) then there isn't really a smell. Rats need more cage space than mice, hamsters or gerbils and they also like to have a few levels so you’ll need to make sure there’s enough room. They have no noticeable odor, but if you bury your face in their fur, they have a mild, sort of flowery, sweet natural smell.
