Many birds and small mammals will eat pumpkin seeds if you offer them in your yard.
What animals eat pumpkins plants. The same night i dumped smashed pumpkins, a deer came and ate one huge pumpkin completely from inside. They have a strong sense of smell, which is why they can easily find pumpkins. Rabbits like to eat tender leaves and new growth on pumpkins, as well as small fruits.
It drives me crazy because 1) pumpkins aren’t cheap 2) i love them outside as pretty decorations 3) my kids get bummed because the picked out these pumpkins (and eventually carve. In the summer they like to feed on the leaves of pumpkin plants, whereas in the fall, they would feed on the fruit. But they prefer pumpkin baked.
When you indeed manage to nurse your pumpkin patch and bear some vegetables, a deer will still feast on your produce, especially when the vegetables are ripe and when the food goes scarce during the start of the first snow. Animals love eating pumpkins when fall comes around! But they got to eat to, right?
To prevent this, pick up any pieces of pumpkin that weren’t eaten and take them out of the coop before dark. Don’t be afraid to prune your pumpkins. Squirrels are among the most common animals that might end up feasting on your pumpkins.
But are pumpkins good for them? Most local wildlife will enjoy eating pumpkins. Also, if you raise chickens, pumpkins make a great meal for domesticated chickens too.
They are high in nutrients and i always use fresh pumpkins to cook and bake with. The rabbits had a bit of a nibble on the tender small plants but seemed to give up as the plants matured. Pumpkins are sweet and full of nutrition so all the wild critters enjoy them.
